When non-straight kids developed non-het crushes on similar characters tho, they had to hide it to not be seen as gay for safety reasons, and without having an outlet to really even talk about it safely, the feelings developed more than straight kids’ crushes on fictional characters that they probably did grow out of. When straight kids said that they had a het crush on an anthro character, they were probably less likely to be made fun of or seen as weird because it was het, and also because they were expected to “grow out of it” so to speak as they began consuming media meant for increasingly older. I can’t source this, but my hypothesis goes like this: plenty of kids developed crushes on anthro characters in media. ![]() ![]() I think because both groups were heavily ostracized in the early days of the internet (altho to highly different degrees mind you), some syncretism may have happened when both communities started developing online spaces and inevitably crossed paths.Īlso, there is that whole thing where a lot of furries can track having crushes on anthro characters in media as kids.
